Tribit Pocket Go brings Bluetooth 6.0 and MicroSD playback to the budget sector

Portable audio usually relies on “trickle-down” technology. Tribit’s latest release suggests otherwise.

In the budget Bluetooth speaker market, we typically expect last year’s tech wrapped in a new colorway. Tribit has taken a different approach with the announcement of the new Pocket Go.

Priced at $34.99, this compact Bluetooth speaker is beating the entire market to a new connectivity standard.

First mover on Bluetooth 6.0?

While high-end flagship speakers and headphones are currently normalizing Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4, the Pocket Go is one of the very first consumer devices to ship with version 6.0. For a budget device to debut a new wireless standard before the big companies is unusual, to say the least. This potentially offers users a better range and “Channel Sounding” capabilities that most premium devices don’t yet support.

Standalone playback returns

Beyond the wireless specs, Tribit has included a feature that has largely disappeared from modern portable audio: a MicroSD (TF) card slot.

For runners or hikers who prefer not to carry a smartphone, this is a significant utility feature. It allows the Pocket Go to function as a standalone player, playing local MP3 or FLAC files directly from the card.

Built for the elements

The chassis follows the “clip and go” form factor made popular by JBL, but Tribit has pushed the durability rating to IP68.

This signifies the unit is dust-tight and can handle submersion in water. Tribit notes that the device is designed to float, and it meets the MIL-STD-810H standard for drop protection.

The competition

The Pocket Go is a competitor of JBL’s Go 4. Tom’s Guide has already cited it as one of the best Bluetooth speakers they have tested.

At $34.99, it offers a good specs-to-price ratio. Whether the audio performance matches the on-paper specifications remains to be seen, but Tribit has certainly made the budget category interesting again.
