Wharfedale Super Denton Review

Wharfedale just added the Super Dentons to their heritage line. The Super Dentons are between the Denton 85s and the larger Wharfedale Lintons, they were inspired by the original Denton 3s, that were released in 1971. These speakers remind you of old times before we looked at graphs to rank speakers, and the Super Denton is the smallest three-way speaker you can buy today.

Review

The Wharfedale Super Denton is a three-way rear-ported bookshelf speaker, it has a 6.5-inch Kevlar cone woofer, a 1-inch soft dome tweeter, and a 2-inch soft dome midrange driver. You can get it in three finishes, Walnut, Mahogany, and Black oak. The drivers and rear-facing ports have a combined frequency response of 52Hz to 20kHz. Its sensitivity is 87dB, and it’s easy to power with a minimal impedance of 3.4 ohms. These speakers were designed to be played with the grille on, to help with edge diffraction issues.

The bass of these speakers gives an old-school vibe, out of the box it is good for most situations, but you may need a subwoofer if you want to feel the bass at high volumes. The dedicated midrange driver does its job well, making acoustic instruments like guitars and pianos sound more live. It works well for all music genres, from rock to jazz.

The Wharfedale Super Denton gives off a large, broad soundstage, but it doesn’t have a lot of dispersion. The treble was right, if you point the speakers directly forward, the soundstage will become larger but you will lose the upper treble. If you toe them in, the soundstage will become smaller and your listening position may be affected. The recommended placement for these speakers is 10 feet apart from each other at a distance of 2-3 feet from the walls, you can push them closer to the walls and the change wouldn’t be that noticeable.

Ultimately, how these speakers sound depends on how you place them in your room and what external devices you connect to them.

Verdict

The Wharfedale Super Denton speakers are a nostalgic nod to classic speaker design, combining modern technology with a vintage aesthetic. As the smallest three-way speaker available today, they deliver a well-balanced sound profile, particularly excelling in the midrange with a warm, old-school bass character. Though with limited dispersion, these speakers provide a broad soundstage and offer versatility across various music genres. Placement and setup are key to optimizing their performance, making them a charming and capable choice for those who appreciate quality sound.
