Wharfedale Super Linton Review

The very first Lintons were introduced in 1965. In 2019, Wharfedale released the new Lintons on their 85th anniversary and became extremely popular. Now, Wharfedale has done the same thing they did with the Dentons, they have released the Super Linton. The Super Linton has so many upgrades, with a step up in performance in almost every aspect, and in this review, we will look at what makes it such a good loudspeaker.

Review

The Wharfedale Super Lintons are slightly bigger than the originals, about two inches taller, which helped the engineers improve the bass unit significantly. To decrease resonance, Wharfedale took layers of particle board and MDF (medium-density fibreboard) and bonded them with a latex-based acoustic-dampening glue. The new cabinet comes in Walnut, Black Oak, and Mahogany. On the back, you get twin bass ports and a pair of binding posts.

The Wharfedale Super Lintons have a new bass unit with a new motor system that improves low-frequency performance, it can go down to 33 Hz, compared to the normal Linton’s 40 Hz. The five-inch Kevlar midrange driver is above the bass unit, and it sits in its own cylindrical chamber, which cancels out some specific back waves from the back of the cone. This allows sounds and vocals in the mid-range frequency to have more clarity. The Super Lintons also have a new tweeter, it is a one-inch, fabric dome tweeter that is supported by a ceramic magnet motor system. This tweeter was designed to give a smooth response in the upper midrange, it also has a new front panel design that doesn’t have any grilles.

With a sensitivity of 90dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, these speakers have so many amplification choices. Some good pairings for the Wharfedale Super Lintons include the Marantz Model M1 and the Denon Home Amp

The Super Lintons also get crossover upgrades. They have two boards, one for the woofers, and one for the mid-range and upper-range. This gives engineers more space to add components, like copper cables for signal transfers and precision resistors.

If you’re upgrading from the basic Lintons, then you won’t need to buy an extra stand for the Super Lintons, they fit perfectly on the older stands and will also look good if the stand has the same color. While you can use other stands, I fully recommend Wharfedale’s stands because they have excellent build quality and will put your speakers at the perfect height. The Super Lintons also come with a new sleek grille design, but I think that they look much better without the grilles.

Verdict

The build quality of the Wharfedale Super Lintons looks and feels fantastic. On first listen, I could tell that they were just like the normal Lintons, only the sound quality and clarity were noticeably better. The bass had more detail and a larger impact, the midrange was more focused, and the treble had way more detail. The Wharfedale Super Lintons prove one thing, if vintage-styled speakers are designed correctly, they can compete with their modern counterparts.
