Samsung Q990C Review: The Best Dolby Atmos Soundbar

The Q990C is Samsung’s latest 11.1.4 Dolby Atmos flagship soundbar, and Samsung has managed to make this one even better than its predecessors without changing much. The Samsung Q990C features a large main soundbar, two small Dolby Atmos wireless surround speakers, and a wireless subwoofer. It has a power rating of 656 watts and 22 total speakers which is the same as the previous Q990B.

Review

The Samsung Q990C features Q-Symphony, which allows it to pair with your Samsung TV’s speakers for a more immersive experience. It can playback Dolby Atmos encoded content wirelessly with compatible Samsung TVs or through its HDMI ARC or eARC connection. The HDMI is not HDMI 2.1, which means that you can only use it for 4K/60 fps gaming. HDMI 2.0 is good for movies, however, you cannot use it fully for your PS5 or other consoles which run at 4K/120 fps.

SpaceFit Sound Pro calibrates the soundbar according to the space it’s in and optimizes the sound for a better, clearer experience. The Active Voice Amplifier breaks down room noise so that onscreen dialogue is always amplified. The Samsung Q990C has WiFi, Bluetooth, Apple Airplay, Spotify Connect, and Tidal Connect. It can also be used with your smart home with compatibility with Amazon’s Alexa.

Setting up the Samsung Q990C is easy; you just need a good-quality HDMI cable. Place the soundbar in front of your TV, the subwoofer on the left or right of your TV depending on where you prefer to sit, and the two surround speakers on both sides of your sofa, that’s literally it.

The Samsung SmartThings app is a must with your soundbar, it makes adjustments very easy and has a lot of features to make your soundbar sound better. You can adjust the levels of the side and top speakers to fill your room better, however, we rarely had to do this as the speaker sounded amazing without any adjustments.

The adaptive sound profile and surround sound are just perfect. Out of the box, the Q990C has the best frequency response out of all the soundbars we have reviewed. The transition from the surround speakers to the subwoofer and the main soundbar has almost no audible gap, which really feels like they are just one speaker. The bar has a center driver so the sound is clear and present without being too loud. The one complaint we have is that the subwoofer does not have enough power to deliver the sound with the soundbar and the surround speaker. If Samsung had gone with two subwoofers or a slightly larger subwoofer, the performance would have been perfect.

User Reviews

Customers like the appearance, clarity, quality, and value of the speakers. For example, they mention it’s sleek and vibrant and the main bar is crisp and punchy. That said, they appreciate the sound quality. Opinions are mixed on performance and connectivity.

Verdict

Overall, the Q990C sounds great for movies, TV, and games and has a very clear and crisp sound. It connects easily to a Samsung TV and the setup is also very easy. The soundbar and surround speakers sound very well, but the subwoofer could do with a little extra power. Another con is connectivity. The soundbar has HDMI 2.0, not having HDMI 2.1 means that you won’t be able to fully use the soundbar for gaming consoles that have HDMI 2.1.
